AUSTRALIA - Gold Coast Marathon
Kenyan athlete Nicholas Manza Kamakaya missed out on a £17,000 bonus by just one second as he won the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia.
The 26-year-old won the race in a time of 2 hours 10 minutes and one second - thereby missing out on the huge cash bonus for a runner hitting the 2:10 barrier by the narrowest of margins.
Even worse, Kamakaya was on schedule to record a time of around 2:09:30 until the later stages of the race - and though he ran hard over most of the final 100 yards, he slowed right down as he broke the tape with his arms held aloft.
